What will I be learning?:
The 3 'T's':
Throughout our time together I will be helping you to improve your climbing and move up through the grades by working on the 3 T's: Training, Tactics, and Technique. Like the base of a pyramid, these are the three aspects of climbing we can work on in order to improve at our sport.
Training:
I will be working with you to develop training plans that work for you and fit into your schedule. In personal training we always say, "the best training plan is the one you will actually do." For some people training may simply mean getting on the wall and climbing a couple of days per week; they just don't have room in their lives for lifting, core work, etc. Others may be interested in a more complete training plan that includes weights, core work, flexibility training, and cardio (cardio for climbing, why would you ever?!?!. . . . .). I will work with you in order to figure out what training plan is right for you in order to meet your climbing goals.
Tactics:
Probably the least talked about and most effective way to improve one's climbing and start climbing harder grades is tactics. Tactics is the way we approach and work a route that is difficult for you. It will include things such as: how difficult of routes should I be getting on, how much time should I spend flashing vs. quick ticking vs. projecting (what's a quick tick?!?!?!?), should I top rope a hard route before attempting to lead it, how does projecting work and what is the process? All of these questions and more will be addressed as we develop your understanding of the tactics of rock climbing. This, more than anything else, will likely take you to the next level in climbing.
Technique:
Learning technique can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, components of our sport. A newer climber will sore through the grades as they learn the basics of standing on their toes, straight arms, heel hooks, etc., but a seasoned climber may have a very difficult time seeing what techniques and bad habits are holding them back and keeping them from sending. To help with learning technique we will rely heavily on video analysis.
I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your climbing goals!
